Google Drive takes up a ton of local storage during uploads

When I try to upload a batch of videos on my LG Optimus, it uses a TON of storage space, usually 300mb+ during the upload. In order to use the app without getting local storage space warnings, I have to upload videos one at a time. Is there a solution to this?
