Android Development - Social Networking / How to

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I've been interested in building a social network/dating app for a while but have no idea where to begin. I'm not even sure for example, events that should happen when a user logs in, to how to communicate with database to send messages, view photos, block users, geo location matching etc.

I wish I create a social / dating app. Something reminiscent of okCupid's app but on a smaller scale. My problem is that, I have no idea on how social networks are developed and have no experience in such. I do know Java but it's been a while since I coded in Java.

What I need is a book / class / tutorial that runs through creating an android social networking app from start to finish with example codes etc. Can someone please point me in the right direction? I'm doing this as a learning experience to learn some new skills.

I will say that I am familiar with the android sdk, emulator and such and actually pretty good at creating UI's and have done some light android development before so I'm not a complete noob. Either way, Your help is much appreciated.
