How do I change emoticons from yellow circles to the Android emoticons on my Sony device's Messaging app?

I'm using the stock Messaging app in Sony Xperia V running Jelly Bean.

When I use :-), ;-), :'( and others, the Messaging app displays yellow circular emoticons I suspect were designed by Sony. What I want are the green/black-and-white Android emoticons. Is it possible to disable the yellow ones? I find them unattractive.
