Rooting an Android device that's NOT a phone

I'm looking at an inexpensive HDTV tuner/DVR on Amazon - MediaSonic Homeworx HW180STB. I'm guessing that it's ARM/Android-based but I'm not sure. I'm going to buy one and open it up to see what's inside. It has all the makings of a cool, inexpensive little OTA DVR box - ATSC tuner, HDMI output, and a USB port for a TB storage drive. Can I get help here or is this strictly for phones?
