Access video and other media from a raspberry to a chromecast?

I am planning to buy and run a RPi file server to store video. I want my 2012 Nexus 7 with Android 5.0 to browse (with thumbnails of course) and play them. What is the appropriate setup for device and server? My best guess is SMB file server, as ES file explorer can open those.

I also want to stream that video to a TV with chromecast. Which media player does that?

A harder question: can I do the same on my LG P880 with Android 4.2?
