Android RecyclerView.OnScrollListener how to check scrolloing up and down

I am using a recyclerview. I want to hide the actionbar when the user scrolls up and show the actionbar when the user scrolls down. I think it can be implemented only by adding OnScrollListener. But can't figure out how it can be done with a recyclerview . Please help!!
