Multi-language predictive text and spell correction

I have recently upgraded my Motorola Moto E android phone from 4.4.2 to 5.0.2. Is it my imagination or did multi-language support vanish? It used to be (I think) that when I typed an SMS it would detect which language I'm using and give me spell correction in that language. I routinely type messages in either French or English. Now I notice that with the google keyboard I can long-press the space bar to change the keyboard. But I don't want to change the keyboard. I want to always use the English US keyboard, but type text messages in English or French or German.

Can someone help me figure out how to do this?
