Developing Indoor WIFI positioning system for Android

For my final project in school, I chose to develop an indoor wifi positioning system to help students get to their classes. I want to do NFC tag implementation for some this, for some other possible ideas too. I want to use native android development since I don't know objective C.

I have been searching for APIs, and RedPin seems to be offline and a few other places have proprietary software or only complete systems. Because I'm a student, something under a GNU or MIT license would be awesome.

I have been toying with the idea of using WiFi Analyzer to get specific decibels at access point locations with MAC addresses and establishing parameters with those numbers. I want to utilize android image overlay for the digital map. But, I am completely lost.

I am hoping some of you may be able to point me in the right direction.
