Optimizing for battery life in China [google blocked]

Google is blocked in China. Almost all Google servers are unreachable without a VPN. I find that this causes the battery to drain quickly on Android devices with a Google account, as Google services are constantly attempting to connect to Google. Google Play Services is usually number 2 in battery usage on my phone. Also in Lollipop, both my mobile data and WiFi icon show exclamation marks, indicating they haven't been able to ping Google.

Is there a way to stop this pinging and connecting activity, or at least to cease connecting when there has been a timeout or two after one another?

I don't want to remove my Google account, because I ever now and then turn on my VPN to use Google services. But constantly having it on also eats data and drains the battery.

I think a lot of Google users in China would be greatly helped with some answers.
