Why isn't Google Messenger alerting me when MMS messages fail to download?

I've recently switched to using Google's Messenger app, instead of the stock messaging app on my Galaxy S4. I mostly keep my mobile data turned off, unless I'm going to be actively using it.

The stock application would alert me that an MMS message had arrived, even when the message could not be downloaded (since data is turned off). Messenger does not put a notification in the notification area, or play a sound, or anything. The only way to know I've missed an MMS message, is to look through each conversation.

Is there a way; a setting I'm missing perhaps, to get Messenger to alert me when an MMS message has arrived and failed to download?
