Did something change with Samsung excepting genaric power cords?

Did something change in our Samsung devices that makes it so that you cannot use generic charging cords to charge the device? We have 3 different Samsung tablets in the home. Two have the older, wide, style charging connections. One has micro usb style. They all stopped working, charging when using generic power cords about the same time. When using samsung cords, the charging works just fine.
