Why are files in the res/raw folder read without extension?

I'm pretty new to Android Dev, and as far as I can see, raw resources are meant to be resources that do not require any kind of compilation/transformation. Something that is kind of weird though, is why are they read without taking into account the extension? Whats' the motive/benefit of that?
