Velocity tracker crashing emulator

I'm new to android development and I tried implementing Velocity Tracker for the first time, I used the code found on the android website to test it: http://ift.tt/18ym4uC

I added this to a new project and a blank activity, it briefly works then breaks

Does anyone know why this would happen?

On another note how would I turn the top half of the screen into solely tracking velocity?
